Many firms know they are retaining more information than they need, but the scale of the backlog can make it difficult to know where to begin. The result is often analysis paralysis that causes further delay, rising costs and growing risk.

Retaining unnecessary information increases storage costs, cyber exposure and compliance risk. It can also raise AI costs, reduce the quality of outputs and expose confidential, privileged or client-restricted information that should be kept outside AI environments.

This educational session, led by Jason Maust, Information Governance Manager at McGuireWoods LLP, will provide a practical approach to reducing a destruction backlog without trying to solve everything at once. It will explore how to get firm management backing to aggressively tackle ancient data and move your firm into compliance with your retention policies by identifying lower-risk, high-value starting points and then keep momentum going.

The session will also show how an initial clean-up programme can develop into an ongoing information governance plan that reduces risk and cost, improves operational efficiency and creates a better-governed foundation for AI.

Information governance in law firms has moved well beyond its traditional association with IT. It now plays a central role across the business, influencing legal operations, risk and compliance, records management, data privacy, knowledge management, security, client service, and firm-wide business processes. As law firms face growing pressure around data volume, regulatory requirements, client expectations, AI readiness, and operational efficiency, IG is being recognized as a business-wide function rather than a standalone team.

This session, led by Crystal McFarland,  Director of Information Governance at Taft, will explore the full scope of where IG engages within a modern law firm and examines how its responsibilities increasingly intersect with legal and business operations; considering whether the evolution of the function calls for a broader “information operations” model—one that reflects the reality that managing information is no longer just about governance, but also about enabling the firm to operate effectively, securely, and responsibly.

Everyone agrees AI needs governance. The challenge is making governance operational.

This session led by Glenn Fischer, Director, Global Information Governance at Mayer Brown LLP and Brianne Aul, Senior Manager of Information Governance Strategy and Operations at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP , will explore the practical building blocks law firms need to move from policy to execution, from decision rights and risk tiering to client restrictions, AI agents, data governance, retention, and ongoing oversight.

Rather than focusing on theory, we'll discuss the processes, controls, and cross-functional operating model that enable firms to govern AI consistently as adoption accelerates.

Attendees will leave with practical ideas and a framework they can adapt to build or mature their own AI governance program.

The next phase of legal AI will not be won by the firms using the most tools, but by the firms that understand the economics, data exposure, dependencies, and infrastructure risks beneath them.

This session, led by Vicky Grech, LegalRM's Chief AI Officer, will give senior executives a practical framework for navigating token costs, dark data, sovereignty, and model dependency as agentic AI moves from experimentation to firm-wide adoption.
